When a high level, important, c-level, or important person steps down, and moves on, from a key position in a company, or organization.
As in...
Proper Usage: When the CEO of a company decides that he would like to spend more time fly-fishing, he resigns. This action is properly called a resignation in this case.
Improper Usage: Jonas, the low-level hourly wage earner at the local food service joint writes a long letter to his shift supervisor explaining the many reasons in detail for moving on, and leaves it on their desk in the back office, when they aren't around, stating that they are "tendering their resignation" with the resignation letter. This action is not a resignation. It is simply quitting.
